Search the word epic on the web in the Indian context, and it throws up only two names – the Ramayana and the Mahabharatha – both of which have not been showcased in their entirety, on the big screen.
It may be a matter of conjecture, but on Wednesday evening, producer Allu Arvind revealed that he was working on a project to capture the Ramayana in full, on 3D and in 4K resolution, in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi soon. While the details are sketchy, the project is to be produced by Mr. Arvind, Madhu Manthena and Namit Malholtra. The big ticket companies involved in the production of what is touted to be a big budget visual spectacle are Prime Focus and Double Negative.
“It has been a long time since the Ramayana has been adapted into a film and we wish to leave no stone unturned to live to the expectations across different sections of society. It will be one of the highest budgeted films in India thus far,” said Mr. Arvind when contacted by The Hindu .
Persistent questions about who would wield the megaphone for such a project and who would essay the roles of Lord Rama and Sita yielded zilch. “It is a huge responsibility for us, but we are working to live up to the challenge of narrating the Ramayana on the big screen in the most magnificent way anyone has done so far,” he said.
“We will start canning the magnum opus that we intend to make, from this November. I can promise that it will be an international film and we are busy assembling the cast and crew for such a production. I can reveal more details latest by this August,” he said.
