In a much-awaited move the Government on Wednesday decided to auction flats under the Rajiv Swagruha Programme from the last week of the month with Government employees as beneficiaries.

The website to facilitate the same would be up and running soon for online, open booking, said Housing Minister A. Indrakaran Reddy after a review meeting with senior officers, adding that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had ordered the same.

It had been decided that in the first phase, 3,719 flats constructed at Bandlaguda and Pocharam would be auctioned. The Centre for Good Governance here had designed a special application for the purpose, the Housing Minister said. He expressed regret that valuable flats constructed earlier were lying in disuse.

Earlier, governments had failed to assess the market rates and blindly spent huge sums of money on several such projects and consequently, together with the interest, the burden now on Telangana was to the tune of ₹1,069 crore, the Minister explained.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi Government had repaid ₹ 820 crore of loans and soon, the balance of ₹256 crore would be paid, Mr. Reddy said.
