All the major roads of the twin cities, including the key ones identified for the bio-diversity summit, will be repaired or recarpeted in several sections within the next fortnight rains permitting, said GHMC Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu on Thursday.
“We have taken traffic police permission to take up repairs even during the day. About Rs.60 crore is being spent on the 21 identified corridors (55 km) and Rs.22 crore in other places. Commuters will have to bear some inconvenience because we are unable to take up all works at night due to logistics issues,” he said.
In an interaction with presspersons, Mr. Krishna Babu said the R&B Department was also taking up road repairs spending about Rs.30 crore (40 km) in all simultaneously. It will also carry out works on the NIMS-Afzalgunj stretch belonging to the National Highways Authority.
With less than a month’s time for the meet, he said only top priority works were being done and assured there will be no compromise on quality. “We wanted to comprehensively improve footpaths and storm water drains on the important corridors. We are now concentrating on footpaths and drain pipes are being laid where water logging was common in Panjagutta, Ameerpet, Chaderghat, etc,” he said. The Commissioner was at pains to explain that the works being taken up in a most economical manner and will be of permanent use to the city. “We will work till the month end, halt till the meeting is over and continue the remaining portions after the summit,” he explained.
Quality works
He was personally monitoring the quality on a daily basis and other than the five technical agencies overseeing, a few voluntary organisations were also roped in to assist. “More than a fault finding mission, it is an effort to do things better and teach our engineers. We are taking all precautions,” he said. More than a few works were redone following quality appraisal like pavements between S.D. Eye Hospital-Tolichowki.
