Rains damage mango crop in Khammam

Mango orchards affected, chilli crop drenched

High velocity winds coupled with heavy downpour that battered many parts of the town, its adjoining areas in Khammam rural mandal and elsewhere in the district on Tuesday night, caused considerable damage to property and mango orchards.

Mango groves at several villages, including Gollapadu in Khammam rural mandal, Mutharam in Mudigonda mandal, Vandanam in Chintakani mandal, suffered damage to a significant extent under the impact of heavy rain and wind devastation late on Tuesday night.

Partially ripe mangoes were knocked off the trees in the orchards spanning over more than six acres at Gollapadu near Khammam town.

Sources said that the sudden spell of heavy rain soaked harvested chilli stocked in open fields in various villages in Tirumalayapalem, Khammam rural, Mudigonda mandals.

Dozens of bags of chilli stocks were drenched at the agriculture market yard due to untimely rain that lasted for nearly two hours on Tuesday night. The staff of the market yard shifted most of the bags to the cotton market yard premises and covered them with over 300 tarpaulins.

Many areas in the town experienced power blackout on Tuesday night as power cables were snapped at different locations due to the rain and wind devastation. A portion of a compound wall at an old house in the Fort area was damaged by unseasonal rain here. However, none were injured in the incident.

Strong gales blew away the asbestos roof of a makeshift cottage at Teerthala village, the abode of Sri Sangameswara Swamy, in Khammam rural mandal.
