A year-and-a-quarter after distributing 100 water filters in three slums, Sujal (www.sujal.org) is back in the city, this time to equip a few Rainbow homes with high-end water purifiers.
The organisation based in Florida has provided water purification systems from Eureka Forbes to eight residential bridge schools in the city, besides installing Reverse Osmosis unit in one.
Apart from this, the voluntary organisation run by a 15-year-old NRI has also funded necessary structures such as overhead tanks in the schools' premises.
Transit homes located in Bible House, Lalapet, Chilkalguda, Malkanguda, Parklane, and Tukaram Gate are prominent among beneficiaries.
“The purifiers will process 50 to 60 litres per hour, serving 50 to 100 children in each home. It cost us Rs.1.4 lakh, which was totally raised by way of donations abroad,” informed A. Mallaiah, grandfather of the founder, Sameer Kailasa from Florida, while addressing a press conference here on Monday.
Kailasa, who is in his Grade-XI now, founded Sujal in fulfilment of community service requirement of his high school.
The start
His earlier visit to India when he observed conditions of abject poverty and lack of access to safe drinking water to multitudes, influenced him in starting the initiative, informed Mr. Malliah.
Last year, Sujal distributed water filters to 100 households in slums of Bholakpur, Parsigutta and Shaikpet, apart from setting up two community water purification plants.
