Several areas in the city experienced slight to moderate rainfall on Sunday. Cloudy and windy weather conditions accompanied the rain which lasted for a couple of hours.

In the last 24 hours, the rainfall recorded by the Met department was around 15 mm.

Areas affected by rains, included Jubilee Hills, Begumpet, Madhapur, Secunderabad, Himayatnagar, Uppal and others.

Weathermen had already sounded a thunderstorm alert for Telangana for the next few days due to southerly winds blowing from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. The sudden change in weather has brought in the much needed respite from the rising summer temperatures. However, the sudden downpour also put the citizens to inconvenience. Motorists had a tough time commuting through some waterlogged roads.

“The Secunderabad-Begumpet road, where Metro Rail work is going on, was badly affected due to the rains,” said P. Rakesh, a private employee and a resident of Begumpet. “It was a nightmare driving on this already damaged road as it was slippery and Metro Rail construction materials were extending onto the main road. The water-logged potholes caught the motorists, including me, unawares making the ride risky.”

A few localities also faced power outages. Some of the low lying colonies in Secunderabad, Tolichowki, Tarnaka and parts of old city were inundated with rain water forcing the residents to contact the local municipal officials for help.

“Due to the rain, the water level in my lane almost reached knee-length. Our apartment parking lot is filled with stranded water making it difficult for the owners to take out their vehicles,” said a young resident of Anand Nagar in Malkajgiri. Residents also complained of clogged drains and open manholes spotted on the major stretches across the city.
