Heavy rains for the last three days ended up inundating several colonies in and around the city and unfolding miserable times for denizens including those at P&T Colony in Gaddiannaram and Banjara Colony near Hayathnagar on Friday.
The premises of the APSRTC bus depot at Hayathnagar too remained under a sheet of water since morning. Rainwater also entered the underground diesel storage tank. Officials said diesel would be procured from other depots to meet the requirements at Hayathnagar depot.
Food packets distributed
Rainwater which started accumulating at P&T Colony and Banjara Colony since yesterday almost rose to waist level this morning and most of the houses had water gushing inside. Food packets were supplied by local politicians, as residents struggled to even cook food and come to terms with the deluge. “I have never seen so much water here and the drainage system needs to be improved,” said Ranga Reddy, a local resident.
Similar situation prevailed at Banjara Colony too with some residents complaining of having gone without food since Thursday night when the intensity of the rains increased. There were arguments when they questioned the local politicians for their failure to improve the road conditions here which eventually resulted in water inundating their homes.
Except for brief respite, heavy rains continued to lash the city on Friday disrupting normal life, inundating scores of low lying areas. Most of the streets and roads in the city remained under a sheet of rainwater and at many places including at Saroornagar, Banjara Nagar, Shahalibanda, Mettuguda, Uppal, Musheerabad, Serilingampally and Kukatpally, water entered homes and commercial establishments.
Thin attendance
Schools and colleges too witnessed thin attendance owing to the downpour as many students preferred to stay home. The day temperatures too dipped considerably with the wet spell continuing with the maximum temperature in the city being 24.5 degrees, nearly 6 degree Celsius less than normal, and the minimum temperature 21.4 degree Celsius.
Rainfall
According to GHMC, the highest rainfall recorded from Thursday till Friday morning was 106.5 mm at Gungal in Yacharam, followed by 101.75 mm at Meerkhanpet and 97.25 mm at Nallavelli. Today between 8.30 a.m. and 4 p.m., the rainfall recordings showed 16.50 mm at Uppal, 15 mm at Malkapur, 13.50 mm at Bandlaguda and 13.25 mm at L.B.Nagar.
