Protesting advocates detained near High Court

August 01, 2014 01:07 am | Updated 01:07 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The police on Thursday detained 29 advocates who assembled near the High Court of Andhra Pradesh demanding separate High Court for the State of Telangana. Several advocates from all over Telangana State came to the High Court and held demonstration outside the premises. As soon as the advocates started raising slogans, the police, who were present in large numbers, took them into custody and shifted them to Kanchanbagh police station. They were released later in the evening. Meanwhile, the Civil Liberties Committee (CLC) has condemned the arrests and termed them illegal. Vice-president of CLC Prof. G. Laxman said it was an attack on High Court advocates by the Telangana Government and demanded that the High Court for Telangana be set up immediately.

National council member of BJP N. Ramachander Rao alleged that the police attacked the advocates who were holding a meeting peacefully and held the State Government responsible for the arrests.

Meanwhile, normal work in the High Court was affected as lawyers agitating for separate High Court for Telangana abstained from work.
