Various women’s organisations staged a novel protest here on Friday against the alleged policy of filling the State coffers with liquor revenue at a “huge social cost”.

Members of the AIDWA, POW and other organisations went around the town with “begging bowls”, seeking alms in a symbolic protest against the alleged policy of promoting liquor sales to augment revenue generation. Addressing the demonstrators at Mayuri Centre, the POW district secretary Siromani alleged that liquor consumption was taking a heavy toll on society.

Alcohol consumption has become a major public health concern disintegrating families.

Atrocities against women are continuing unabated under the influence of alcohol, she alleged, pointing out that alcohol consumption was the leading cause of growing road accidents.

She demanded that the government should implement a liquor ban.

AIDWA district president M. Bharati, Chaitanya Mahila Sangham district president Vijaya and others spoke.
