Property worth lakhs of rupees was gutted when a fire broke out at the ITI Guild in Vijayanagar colony on Sunday afternoon. No casualties were reported.

Local people noticed flames erupting from the guild compound around 4 p.m. and alerted the police who in turn informed the fire control room. Though a fire tender from Langer Houz fire station rushed to the spot and began fire fighting operations immediately, it could not control the blaze.

Combustible material stored in automobile workshops and a paint godown in the compound helped spread the fire. Soon fire tenders from various fire stations in the city were pressed into the job. A couple of explosions were also heard from the place, which officials attributed to gas welding equipment inside the workshops.

It took more than three hours for fire fighters to control the blaze. As a precautionary measure, power supply in the area was shut down. “Sixteen fire tenders were pressed into service. We are investigating the cause of the fire,” Director, Fire Services, P. Venkateshwar, said.

The police also employed two water cannons to douse the fire.

Following the incident, Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy and Hyderabad Police Commissioner M. Mahender Reddy visited the spot.

Sunday’s fire accident left many people staying in the compound’s neighbourhood agitated over the alleged failure of authorities to check ‘illegal’ functioning of the workshop in the middle of a residential area.

“How can the authorities allow a cluster of workshops to function in the midst of a residential locality? Steps should be taken to close down the workshops immediately,” Syed Omer, a local resident, said.
