An Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and a Sub-Inspector (SI) received minor injuries when irate locals pelted stones soon after the GHMC and revenue officials demolished 15 houses under construction within the full tank level limits of Mysamma Cheruvu or IDL Lake, Kukatpally on Monday morning.

The ACP, M. Malla Reddy, and the SI Raju Yadav were among the posse of policemen providing security to municipal officials led by B. Gangadhar Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Kukatpally circle and Balanagar Tahsildar Rajeshwar Reddy, who undertook demolition of some of the constructions with two excavators and labour, when the incident happened.

Lake encroached

The police swung into action and dispersed the crowd within no time, said Mr. Malla Reddy. Senior municipal officials later told presspersons that more than half of the area prescribing to the FTL of the lake has been encroached upon over the last decade because of the area’s proximity to Hi-Tec City and high land rates.

While three colonies had already come up within the FTL, the revenue and municipal authorities had decided to act on the ongoing constructions taken up by the “land mafia” to begin with. The protesting people contend that the constructions were well within the FTL limits.

The GHMC is planning to hold a coordination meeting with the revenue authorities and also the Irrigation Department officials to decide on the course of action to be taken against the existing unauthorised constructions numbering about 800 that have mushroomed within the FTL limits, an official spokesperson claimed.
