The State police have decided to crack down on eve-teasers to curtail the menace of increasing assaults on women.

“The recent incidents in Delhi and other places have highlighted the increasing trend of targeting women in public places. To tackle this, we are planning to take stringent action against such elements,” Director- General of Police V. Dinesh Reddy said while interacting with media persons after launching new e-Challan system, here on Monday.

He said that the decoys comprising women constables would be pressed into service at public places to trace the people indulging in eve teasing.

Women facing such harassment can also dial ‘100’ and alert the policemen. Soon after receiving the call, the police teams would rush to the spot and take eve teasers into custody, he said.

“We have observed that when eve teasers are left unchecked, they gradually take to serious offences including rapes. By checking these elements early, we can reduce the attacks on women,” he maintained.

To crack down on criminals, the dial ‘100’ programme is also being revamped, he said.

All the police stations in the State will be provided with a vehicle branded with ‘Dial 100’ for quick response. Once a complaint is raised through ‘100’, a call centre personnel would give a verification call to the same number to enquire about the action taken within two hours as against earlier practice of 24 hours, Mr. Reddy said.

“The service is also being upgraded so that the details and location of the caller would be displayed whenever a complaint is lodged,” he said.

He also mentioned that the Chief Minister has submitted a letter to the Prime Minister requesting to sanction Rs. 550 crore for installing 5,500 surveillance cameras at public places in the GHMC limits.
