Jolted by the recent incident of a techie’s rape in a cab, the police have begun to register cabs operating in the city.
The traffic police has notified all travel agencies that provide cab services to forward the details of vehicles they operate, and the registration process will start on Friday, Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Amit Garg said.

However, a major obstacle that might hamper the process is the plying of private vehicles in the guise of taxis. These vehicles are hired by the travel agencies from individuals, who do not posses the valid taxi licence and the number plates too don’t indicate that they are commercial taxis.
“We cannot launch a special drive to curb this practice as it will be difficult for us to identify the violations. We can’t differentiate between passengers or personal users. However, we will look into the matter and take appropriate steps soon,” Mr. Garg said.
Police officers are also seeking the citizens help to report such violations where cars are being put to dual use illegally. “People can easily distinguish between the cabs and private vehicles as they board these vehicles. They should come forward to help the police in nabbing these culprits,” a senior police official said.
Meanwhile, police has just completed the registration of auto-rickshaws that was started after a techie, suspecting the motives of a driver, jumped out of a moving auto at the Mind Space junction early this year sustaining injuries. About 41,000 autos have already been registered and the cards with auto owner’s details will be provided soon, Mr. Garg said.
Now passengers can call police and inform the details of the auto and its driver based on the details displayed in the autos.
