The Santoshnagar police on Wednesday arrested five women on the charge of abducting a two-and-a-half year-old boy Shaik Rehan, in Burhanshah Darga area on Tuesday.

Suspecting the handiwork of local beggars, they apprehended one Farzana (25) and her mother Masarath Begum (40), who admitted to having sold the boy to one Reshma Devi, at RN Colony. The police rushed to Reshma’s house and rescued the boy.

Reshma Devi, who had no sons, had asked Masarath Begum to arrange for a boy whom she could raise as her son. She paid Masarath Begum a sum of Rs. 1,000 in return for the boy, Santoshnagar Inspector K.V. M. Prasad said.

The police arrested the three women and two other women relatives and produced them in court.
