The All India Plastic Moulded Furniture Manufacturers Association has expressed concern at the 28% levy the products will attract under the GST regime.
Besides making the products, namely chairs, stools and tables expensive for the consumers, the levy would also affect the small and medium scale units engaged in the manufacturing.
Describing the increase as steep and unjustified, the Association president K.P. Raveendran said the existing tax works out to about 18%. Secretary Sushil Aggarwal said the Association has sent a representation appealing for lowering of the levy to the GST Council.
President of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Plastic Molded Furniture Manufacturers Association Pabba Upender Gupta said in Telangana there were about 40 units that make the products. The GST levy comes at a time when there is a growing demand to reduce the tax from 18% to 12%.
The GST Council, the All India Association leaders said, had separated plastic furniture from plastic household articles. Plastic household articles, kitchenware, crate and the likes come under 18% bracket while the furniture falls under 28%.
