A large number of people took part in the massive plantation programme at Thatikonda village in the district here on Thursday as part of the Haritha Haram programme.

MLA T. Rajaiah and district collector A. Devasena led the programme which involved students, Anganwadi workers, NREGS labourers, and NGOs. It was decided that 10 lakh seed balls would be dispersed on barren lands, hillocks and abandoned private lands to increase the green cover.

Mr. Rajaiah said the State government had decided to plant 240 saplings and as part of it, plantation was taken up in all districts, adding that Jangaon should emulate all other districts and people should voluntarily come forward to make it a grand success. “Plantation is not a government programme. It is the social responsibility. Since the government has come forward with the programme, people should contribute their best,” he said.

Collector A. Devasena said the district administration planned to plant two crore saplings this rainy season across the district. As many as one crore seed balls have been prepared and one crore plants procured. A total of 7,600 acre of government land and 1,900 acres of private land was identified to take up massive plantation programme. “This is such a great scheme. It cannot be done with a single agency or individual. For better results, everybody should join hands. Imagine dispersing 10 lakh seed balls in single day?,” she said urging people to supplement the efforts of the State government.

The district administration plans to organise more of such programme like planting 10 lakh trees in one day.
