In an effort to save Hussainsagar lake from encroachments, a city-based voluntary organisation, Save Our Urban Lakes in collaboration with Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) on Saturday has organised a tree plantation drive on the shoreline of the lake. Students from different colleges in the city participated in the event where they dug up pits and planted saplings of flowering plants on a tract of land close to the statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Charu Agawal, a student of Aurora Degree College and one of the participants, strongly felt it was necessary to save the water body from encroachments so as to protect the environment.

Jasveen Jairath of SOUL said despite the ruling of the Supreme Court, encroachments were coming up all around the lake. The present exercise was aimed at creating awareness among the youth to protect the water bodies.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority supplied few varieties of saplings to the students to plant and also provided the necessary equipment. B. Nagi Reddy, Assistant Director, HMDA, said that the authority was taking up tree plantation on the shoreline of the lake so as to beautify it.
