Drinking water leakage from a metro water pipeline caught the residents of a few colonies in Champapet unawares in the midnight of Wednesday as water gushing into the houses created confusion and panic.
Sources inform that the residents of Reddy Colony, Balaji Nagar and Chinthal Basthi in Champapet municipal division suddenly woke up to the horror of inundation in the intervening night between Wednesday and Thursday.
They hurriedly grabbed the children and ran onto the roads which were already flooded with knee deep water.
It took some time before they realised that the inundation was due to the bursting of the main trunk line of the Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board, and not due to any natural calamity. The main supply line of Krishna water to the Chanchalguda reservoir, and another Vaishali Nagar reservoir reportedly burst, resulting in inundation.
Allegation
Residents alleged that despite being informed, the Water Board officials arrived late, and stopped the supply in the line. With essential commodities and utensils swept in water, many residents spent the festival day on Thursday cleaning up, and bringing their houses into order.
Upon enquiry, Director (Technical) of the HMWS&SB Prabhakar Sharma informed that the leakage was due to the misplacement of rubber gasket used near the joints of the pipes. The problem was rectified, he said.
