PHC staff nurse alleges sexual misconduct

Demands action against district Medical and Health officer

An aggrieved contract staff nurse working at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Khammam division staged a protest at the ZP Centre here on Thursday demanding action against a “top-rung” officer of the District Medical and Health Department for allegedly subjecting her to sexual harassment.

The staff nurse squatted in front of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar statue even as the leaders of the Bahujana Aikya Vedika extended their support to her stir.

The aggrieved nurse alleged that the “top-rung officer” of the department, working in the district for a long time, nursed a grudge against her for spurning his advances and transferred her on deputation from one health facility to another, six times in the past one year.

Stating that she had already lodged complaints against the officer with the State Human Rights Commission and the senior police officials concerned, the nurse wanted the authorities to remove the man from the post to facilitate an impartial inquiry into the sexual harassment charge against him.

She said the Madhira town police registered a case against her based on a “false complaint” filed by the “errant officer” charging her with sending “abusive” text message to him.
