After submitting an interim report with several immediate measures to improve safety and security of women and girls in Telangana, the Special Committee will be shortly leaving for Singapore to study the community policing there.

Impressed with the exhaustive report and recommendations to create a sense of security and safety for women and girls right away, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao asked the Committee on Safety and Security of Women and Girls in Telangana State to leave for Singapore at the earliest and study the functioning of the systems there.

The six member committee of three IAS and IPS women officers headed by senior IAS officer Poonam Malakondaiah will interact with women working in government and private institutions, students and also senior police and welfare department officers in Singapore to understand the procedures and practices there. The study tour to Singapore, known for effective implementation of laws, would help the government in better enforcement of laws related to women safety, said committee members.

The Chief Minister, who was quite receptive to the report submitted by the committee after interacting with various stakeholder departments and women from different fields, already issued instructions to some departments, including RTC, to implement them.

Some of the immediate recommendations of the committee are to create first response system by having an exclusive three – digit emergency helpline exclusively for women, 24-hour one stop support centre at the district level and three in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area, blue print for woman friendly police station, induction of more women into police department, introducing She-Taxis/autos, separate enclosures for women in public transport.

Ms. Poonam Malakondaiah said that the committee report was hosted on www.Telangana.gov.in for people to read and their suggestions could be mailed to wcdsctg2014@gmail.com. The committee will consider them before submitting its final report to the government in the next 45 days.
