A pan shop owner killed his wife and polio-stricken son reportedly after a tiff with her over reckless spending on mehndi for Ramzan on Monday at Pahadishareef, police said.

The accused person, Md. Abdul Khaleel, of Mohammed Nagar in Errakunta, was enraged after he found his wife Sajida Begum (28) and daughter Jeba (7) having mehndi designs on their hands on Sunday night. Khaleel chided them for spending on mehndi and sought to know how much they spent for it, Pahadishareef Additional Inspector K. Giri Kumar said. While his wife maintained that she got mehndi applied at her mother’s house, Jeba blurted out that they had gone to a beautician for it. A furious Khaleel shouted at his wife accusing her of wasting whatever little he was earning, police said.

He allegedly smothered his wife to death and later slit her throat to ensure that she was dead. He also smothered his elder son, Rahman (9), to death, police said. He later took away his younger son, Raheem (7), to his brothers’ house.

On Monday morning, Jeba began crying as she noticed her mother and brother dead and younger brother missing. The neighbours called in the police. Later Khaleel turned up at the house and admitted to the killings.

Khaleel married Sajida Begum 13 years ago. They had two sons and two daughters. The elder daughter, Heena, 11, was with her maternal grandmother the previous night.
