A staggering 2,70,014 seats remained vacant in the degree colleges in Telangana after the first phase of seat allotment on Thursday in 1,089 colleges across six universities.

Out of the 4,10,047 seats available 1,40,033 seats were allotted through the Degree Online Services Telangana (DOST). Maximum seats were allotted in the Osmania University region where 57,950 students secured seats out of the 1,42,860 available intake in 409 colleges.

Including court cases

Releasing the allotment details here, Convenor of DOST K. Venkata Chalam along with Vice Chairman of Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) Mallesh Sankasala said the allotted seats include the colleges that approached the court preferring to stay out of DOST.

Around 8,000 candidates were allotted seats in the colleges that went to court but were kept in abeyance waiting judgement from the court.

Report to colleges

Prof. Venkata Chalam said students who are allotted seats will have to report to the respective colleges before June 20 and classes will commence from June 21.

Prof. Mallesh said that candidates have to submit their original certificates only if they are sure of joining the allotted college or else they can participate in the second phase of web options to be opened from June 21 to 24.

Second phase

Second phase allotments will be done on June 28. Students have to be cautious in choosing web options in the second phase. They have to pick up the best colleges and also the college allotted to them in order to retain the seat.

The last phase of web options will be held from July 4 to 8 for leftover seats and the final allotment will be done on July 13, DOST Convenor said.

Prof. Venkata Chalam said after OU, Kakatiya University received maximum allotments (34,812) followed by Satavahana University (16,407), Mahatma Gandhi University (10,547), Telangana University (10,303) and Palamuru University (10,014).

Better prepared

This is the second year of online admissions after launching the Degree Online Services Telangana (DOST).

However, this year it was better organised, except for a few technical glitches, unlike last year when the Government received flak from students, parents and colleges as they were under-prepared to take up such a massive exercise.
