The Osmania University administration has decided to get tough with the non-boarders in the university hostels and warned them to vacate immediately or else the university would be constrained to initiate stringent action.
The administration in a statement here said that some hostels are in a dilapidated and awful state and the facilities have come under a great strain and overcrowding has compounded the problem. The university plans to step up renovation work for better accommodation to the fresh batch of students to be admitted for the 2017-18 session. “This initiative is a part of the reforms undertaken by the university,” the statement said. 4,000 non-boarders
It is estimated that around 4,000 non-boarders are illegally staying in the hostel, and these include students who have completed their courses and also those who have no connection with the university. OU has 22 hostels with an intake capacity of 8,000 students.
University Vice-Chancellor S. Ramchandram said that they have used all modes so far to convince the non-boarders to leave the hostels and now they have no other option left but to take some stringent action, including using the police to vacate them, “It is our responsibility to ensure that fresh students are given admission and unless the non-boarders are vacated, the hostels can’t be spruced up,” he said.
Demolition
Among the 22 hostels available now, four hostels - Godavari, E1, E2 and D hostels are unfit for staying and the varsity plans to demolish them soon. Godavari hostel is already vacated.
