The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has, at last, began to repair roads in the old city too. And along with some of the important road corridors, two main thoroughfares from Charminar to Chandrayangutta and another from Toli Chowki to Qutb Shahi Tombs and Shaikpet are being given a facelift.
Mayor Mohd. Majid Hussain and Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu, on the second consecutive night inspection, visited several parts of Charminar, Gulzar House, Shalibanda, Enginebowli, Chandrayanagutta and environs.
Mr. Krishna Babu stated that Rs.7 crore was sanctioned for repairing the Charminar-Chandrayangutta road while another Rs.2.5 crore was being spent for roads leading to Salarjung Museum. For the road leading to the tombs from Tolichowki and onward to Shaikpet, a sum of Rs.7 crore has been sanctioned. All these works are expected to be completed by the month end.
The Commissioner expects delegates to the bio-diversity summit to visit Charminar, Quli Qutb Shahi Tombs, Paigah tombs, Salarjung museum, Mir Alam Tank and other places of historic significance. Following a suggestion made by the public representatives, he said modern streetlighting with a traditional look will be arranged on the Charminar-Chandrayanagutta road similar to the ones set up in the pedestrianisation project to provide for an uniform look. Seven-eight year old palm trees will also be planted on central dividers.
Road widening in these parts was help up at several places because of litigation, he pointed out and assured of negotiations with the affected parties concerned to take them up on priority. The municipal corporation had also appointed a consultant for upkeep of heritage structures like the Unani Hospital, M.J. Market and others.
The Mayor said that apart from main roads, footpaths, dividers and stagnation points will be tackled in the next few including repairs to internal roads. Heavy rains caused a delay in taking up and also completing the works, he explained. GHMC officials from different wings were present.
