Most wanted chain snatcher, Sayeed Hussain alias Lamba Hussain of Kalapather, who was evading arrest for the last two years was nabbed by the city police on Wednesday. The police recovered 6.3 kilograms of gold ornaments, worth Rs. 1. 7 crore, two Karizma bikes and one dagger from him.

Announcing his arrest and that of his accomplices, at a press conference here on Wednesday, Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy said that Lamba Hussain and his associate Mirza Azmath Ali Baig, a businessman of Nawab Sahab Kunta and Mohd Akheeluddin alias Khalifa, who is absconding, committed 228 chain snatchings in last two years.

“The gang members would select isolated places and target lone women walking on the streets. They would not hesitate to attack anyone who tried to catch them,” Mr. Reddy said. In November, Lamba Hussain stabbed two constables of L. B. Nagar police station at Kothapet while they tried to apprehend him, the police said. After attacking the constables he fled with the motorcycle of one of the constables and set it ablaze at Shamshabad. The police also caught three receivers - Mohd Abdul Khaleel of Jahanuma, Shaik Ahmeduddin of Rein Bazaar and Syed Arshad of Bandlaguda. Two others Mohd Irfan of Fatimanagar and Majeed Khan of Talabkatta are absconding.

M. Mahendar Reddy said that as the chain snatchers are easily securing bail and resuming their activities the police are contemplating of invoking Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act against them.
