No scam in fee reimbursement: colleges

July 25, 2014 12:17 am | Updated 12:17 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The Telangana Engineering and Professional Colleges Managements Association (TEPCMA) rejected the Government’s argument that fee reimbursement was a scam and colleges were on wrong side.

“The Government admits students through counselling and pays the fee. Management students are not eligible for fee reimbursement. Then where is the scope for a scam,” said the TEPCMA representatives at a press conference here on Thursday.

TEPCMA chairman Gautam Rao said that if some colleges have used dubious means to misuse fee reimbursement, the Government was free to take action against them. Welcoming the proposed changes to the fee reimbursement scheme, he said the colleges were for improving quality and extending scholarships to the deserving.

“There are more than Rs.1,200 crore arrears pending. Previous governments warned us if we collected fee from students. How can colleges improve quality when fee is not paid for years,” he asked. He reminded that nearly two lakh people were getting employment due to the colleges and showing the colleges in bad light was not proper.

To express their viewpoint, the TEPCMA is organising a round table conference with all political parties on July 26 at Hotel Katriya. The idea is to explain to the political parties the colleges’ point of view on the controversy and discuss the steps needed for improving quality.
