The problem of inundation for residents of Maruthinagar is likely to be solved with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) beginning works to lay stormwater pipelines connecting the Hussainsagar Lake.
The lack of a stormwater drain system used to lead to severe inundation of the area whenever there was rain in the locality, which is adjacent to the Lake View Park. Being a low-lying area, Maruthinagar had the perpetual problem of heavy water stagnation. In the absence of sewage lines, drainage water also used to overflow in the streets. Similar is the situation in the neighbouring PJR Nagar, says Maruthinagar Welfare Association president M. Mahesh Yadav.
“As a temporary measure, civic authorities had installed a motor to pump the stagnant water into Balkapur nala. But we wanted a permanent solution,” he explained.
To address these problems, authorities are now laying 270-metre stormwater pipes from Maruthinagar to Hussainsagar. Similarly, a separate 400-meter pipeline is being laid connecting it to the main trunk of HMWSSB in the nearby Sewerage Treatment Plant for disposing the sewage.
All these works are being taken up under the Hussainsagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project with an estimated cost of Rs. 76.30 lakh. Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister M. Maheedhar Reddy laid foundation for the works on Monday. Labour Minister Danam Nagendar and Secunderabad MP Anjan Kumar Yadav were also present. Residents later requested the Municipal Administration Minister to permit construction of another gate from the Maruthinagar end into the Lake View Park to enable residents offer prayers at decades-old Gali Pochamma temple during Bonalu festival and other occasions. The Minister replied that a meeting would be held with authorities shortly to take a decision on the plea.
