A 23-year-old Nigerian student was assaulted with an iron rod by a local resident after the two got into an argument over parking. The incident took place on Wednesday at Singada Basti, Road No.10, Banjara Hills, where both of them stay. Kazeem, a student of Nizam College, sustained minor injuries and a case has been registered against Mohd. Gaffoor, for assaulting him by the Banjara hills police.

According to Banjara Hills sub-inspector K. Krishnaiah, Kazeem used to park his car in Gaffoor’s parking lot instead of the space allotted to him and an argument ensued between the two over this issue. In a fit of rage, Gaffoor assaulted the Nigerian student with a rod.

The issue gains significance as The African Group of Heads of Mission declared that it would not join Africa Day celebrations, in solidarity with Masunda Kitada Oliver, a Congolese student who was killed last week in Delhi. However, later they agreed to participate in the event, which was organised by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), in the national capital. “The situation in India is no longer safe for us. Even the police are not willing to help us when we approach them,” said Emmanuel Omurunga, chairman of the African Students Association, Telangana.
