Salar Jung open well thrown open

July 19, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:55 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The newly-restored Salar Jung open well at Moula Ali, which was inaugurated by South Central Railway general manager Ravindra Gupta, marked a significant step by the organisation towards conservation of precious water and its drive to restore abandoned water bodies.

The over 150-year-old open well is expected to yield a whopping 2 lakh litres of water every single day. It would mean a saving of at least Rs. 1 crore a year to the Hyderabad division of SCR, against the amount that it presently pays as water charges to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, said Mr. Gupta, in the presence of the President of SCR Women’s Welfare Organisation, Shikha Gupta.

The well will cater to the water supply needs of Railway colony, diesel loco, and electric car sheds at Moula Ali.

The revival of this heritage well, which is situated adjacent to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) training centre, was an initiative driven by Mr. Gupta himself.

Others present included divisional railway manager-Hyderabad Aruna Singh and principal chief engineer, SCR, S.N. Singh.

Later, Mr. Gupta and others planted saplings at the same location. The general manager visited the RPF training centre to check on another old well, and discussed plans for its revival.
