Chief Minister K. Rosaiah said an empowered committee will look into the proposal to bring out a new law to protect lakes and storm water drains from encroachments. He felt such a law was needed not only to protect the water bodies but also the lives and properties of people living near them.
At a meeting with all civic officials on Sunday, the Chief Minister was informed that all the tanks like Saroornagar, Kukatpally, Meerpert, etc., were full and any more rain will inundate nearby areas putting in danger many unauthorised dwellings, a press release from the Chief Minister's office said.
Mr. Rosaiah wanted to know the steps proposed by various departments to tackle inundations, water logging and traffic bottlenecks due to rains. He was told that while the roads conditions was bad, there was an alarming increase in vehicles with 64,000 cars added in the last few months alone.
Road widening
The Chief Minister suggested speeding up road widening, junction improvements, restrict parking on main roads and reducing traffic stoppage time for VIPs after reviewing with the General Administration Department. He wanted the Collectors of Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy to expedite drains widening with help of elected representatives.
Adequate steps should be taken to control outbreak of any seasonal diseases or epidemics and the Water Board was directed to increase samples testing to check for contaminations. GHMC is to complete all road repairs to make motorable and drain out water on roads within few hours of a downpour to provide for smooth traffic flow.
Ministers D. Nagender, Mukesh Goud, Mayor B. Kartika Reddy, and heads of GHMC, HMWSSB, Traffic police and others were present.
