New knee surgery promises faster recovery, lesser pain

A team of orthopaedic surgeons at Star Hospitals performed a ‘Fast Track Knee Replacement (FTKR)’ surgery which they say promises to shorten hospital stay, ensure fast recovery and minimise pain and scarring.

Joint replacement surgeon Neelam Ramana Reddy, who led the team, described FTKR as a comprehensive, evidence-based care focussed to present optimum outcome to patients suffering from severe degeneration of knee joint and requiring total knee replacement. The procedure also does away with the general misconception of knee replacement surgery as being excruciatingly painful, involving a long period of bed rest and prolonged physiotherapy, Dr. Ramana Reddy said. FTKR is a minimally invasive surgery that requires small incision and drastically reduces disruption of soft tissues, he said.
