The Nehru Zoological Park has put on display its first-ever seahorse, with the introduction of a pair of the slow-moving marine fish in the aquarium here on Tuesday.
Zoo officials said two pairs of the species were arranged by marine biologist Sainath Shanmukh, who is also an active member of the Zoo Corps. One pair was released into the display aquarium for visitors on Tuesday.
“We will introduce the second pair also in the next few days,” said State Zoos Director P. Mallikarjuna Rao.
The seahorse, which is found in shallow tropical and temperate waters across the globe, has a tail like that of a monkey and can live up to six years in captivity, officials said. The female lays around 300 to 1,000 eggs in a clutch and the male has a brood pouch in which the eggs are brooded.
