Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N Chandrababu Naidu has been forced to suspend his 26-day-old ‘Vastunna Meekosam’ padyatra for a day on Saturday after sustaining a bruise on his back when the dais from which he was speaking collapsed at Gadwal in Mahabubnagar district on Friday night.

A team of doctors conducted a thorough medical check up on Saturday morning, including a back x-ray, and advised him to take at least two to three days rest, party leaders told The Hindu from Shetti Atmakur village near Gadwal where Mr. Naidu is camping. Senior party leaders accompanying him in the padyatra also urged him to take three-four days rest. However, the TDP president insisted on resuming his walkathon after a day's rest.

Mr. Naidu’s wife Ms. N Bhuvaneswari and his son N Lokesh rushed to the village on Friday night and Jr. NTR, film actor and son of TDP Rajya Sabha member N Harikrishna, also met him after suspending his film shooting. Mr. Naidu’s brother-in-law N Balakrishna visited him on Friday afternoon before the incident took place.

Party leaders stated that the wooden dais on which Mr. Naidu and other leaders were standing caved him when he was about to speak on Friday night. Senior party leader Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy said the party would take stock of the situation on Saturday evening.
