Police on Tuesday claimed that Kashmiri student Mudasir Kamran, who was found hanging in his hostel room at the English and Foreign Language University (Eflu), was at the Osmania University police station for 35 minutes on March 1 (between 11.10 p.m. and 11.45 p.m.), and that too in the presence of other students and a professor.
In a detailed press release on Tuesday, DCP (East Zone) R. Jayalakshmi said Vasim, along with some students of the university, had lodged a complaint on March 1 against the deceased for repeated assaults on him. Three varsity professors, Vijra, Maya Pandit and Chanchala Naik, were also at the police station.
Friend-turned-foe
Mudasir and Vasim were roommates and close friends, but the former annoyed Vasim by making physical advances, and hence Vasim shifted to a different room.
But a possessive Mudasir repeatedly assaulted Vasim and insisted that he should not mingle with others.
Vasim had submitted representations to two deans (Hostels & PhD) and the proctor, upon which a warning was issued against Mudasir. Vasim approached the Osmania University Police on March 1 on being assaulted again.
OU Sub-Inspector A. Madhusudan Reddy summoned Mudasir to the station and counselled him.
At the same time, another batch of students who went to the police station with Prof. Vedasharan, said the issue would be resolved at the university. They had also promised protection to Vasim. However, on March 2 evening, one of the students found Mudasir hanging from the fan.
University ‘bandh’
Meanwhile, the agitating students have decided to extend the university bandh by two more days and are also planning to suspend power supply to the administrative block.
The university administration has constituted a 10-member committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the incident. The Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee too demanded a probe into the death and action against the Proctor.
Meanwhile, anger over the death of Mudasir, who was laid to rest on Tuesday, has spilled on to the streets in his native Pulwama district of J&K, with his family refusing to accept the suicide theory behind his death.
