Having lost steam earlier this year when they faced the threat of being shelved, MMTS phase II works are back on track, with officials optimistic about their completion on time.
Phase II was originally scheduled to start this January but was delayed when one of the partners pulled out from the joint venture. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the Indian Railways arm entrusted with the project’s execution, roped in GMR Infra and Tata Projects to join existing partner Kalindee Nirman. Since August when works began, nearly one lakh cubic metres of earth work has been completed.
20 new bridges“Phase II works are happening between Moula Ali and Sanathnagar, and Ghatkesar-Cherlapalli. At 20 locations, bridge works, including construction of new bridges, is progressing,” said RVNL chief project manager P. Srinivas.
Phase II of MMTS will enhance connectivity between Ghatkesar and Sanathnagar via Moula Ali (37 km), Bolarum-Medchal (14 km), Falaknuma-Umdanagar (14 km). The connectivity from Moula Ali to Sanathnagar will bypass Secunderabad station, providing the much needed relief to commuters during peak hours.
Phase II will also see five new railway stations come up between Sanathnagar and Moula Ali. A new rail line will be laid between Tellapur and Ramachandrapuram (4.5 km) and the existing railway line between Secunderabad and Bolarum, which is not electrified, will be electrified under the Rs. 819 crore phase II project.
Rs 60 cr. this year for projectMr. Srinivas informed that Rs. 60 crore has been earmarked this financial year for the project, which will receive two-third funding from the State and the remainder from the Centre.
RVNL and South Central Railway (SCR) officials are optimistic of completing works phase II works within three years. Under phase I of MMTS, SCR currently runs 121 services transporting 1.5 lakh people on a daily basis. When completed, phase I and II will cater to five lakh passengers daily, said an official.
