Award winning teachers from the Hyderabad district were a disappointed lot on Sunday, the Teachers' Day, as they had been deprived of the privilege of sharing their moment of glory with minister invitees.
None of the three ministers who were to be guests for the Teachers' Day celebrations turned up on the red-letter day and those chosen as the best teachers in the city had to make do with second rung bureaucrats.
Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy, Minister for Health Danam Nagender and Minister for BC Welfare Mukesh Goud, whose names were mentioned in the invitation, failed to attend the celebrations, and the reason was said to be ‘unavoidable circumstances'. Surprisingly, the programme was devoid of the presence of even MPs and MLAs from the city.
93 awardees
In all, 93 teachers, including primary and high school teachers, physical directors and headmasters received their awards on the 49{+t}{+h} Teachers' Day celebrations commemorating former President of India Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary.
Additional Joint Collector Y. Satyanandam, who attended as the chief guest, said that self-made men are glory to the institutions, and lamented that the present-day society is experiencing dearth of men who observe sterling standards in education and knowledge.
Drawing attention to the poor pass percentage in SSC examinations, he urged the city teachers to strive for better results. Project Officer of Rajiv Vidya Mission V.N. Mastanaiah highlighted the significance of teaching profession, and said teachers have the potential to change the society by influencing their wards. He urged commitment from the teachers, as government schools were being resorted to only by deprived sections of the society.
