Counselling for admission into Post Graduate courses of Osmania University started on Monday at the Nizam College for Commerce and Economic subjects.

Tension built up for some time as some Telangana activists examined the certificates of candidates to verify their region.

A girl student who came from Coastal Andhra region for admission into Commerce subject was allegedly asked not to attend the counselling. She reportedly left the place fearing the activists, who were apparently from Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). No other incident was reported.

As per the present rules, students from Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions can stake claim in the 15 per cent seats in the Telangana region. They get a seat based on merit after competing with local students for those 15 per cent seats.

An official said that some top students from other regions prefer Osmania University courses for reasons such better coaching facilities in the State capital and more job opportunities.

Fee details

The counselling will continue till July 27. The course fee ranges from Rs.3,340 to Rs.23,000 with the latter being for self-financed courses. Fee concession is available for BC, SC, ST and other reserved category candidates.

The BC, SC, ST, Minority and Physically Challenged candidates, whose parents’ income is less than Rs.1 lakh can avail fee reimbursement. However, they have to pay the fee if the government fails to reimburse the fee.
