The relatively unknown concept of ‘dark energy’ will be one of the central topics in the upcoming Physics and Astronomy Meet-2015, which will be held in the city.
Renowned Indian physicist and director of the B.M. Birla Science Centre B.G. Sidharth will present a paper titled Signature of Dark Energy/ Cosmic Radiowave Background during the meet. Dr. Sidharth said the paper would dwell into ‘dark energy’ and its signature, the radio waves, which can be the basis of many futuristic ideas.
“Unlike solar energy, dark energy is found everywhere. Unfortunately, this energy is weak. If we can make dark energy devices then it can work anywhere,” said Dr. Sidharth, who had presented a paper in 1997 that put forward the concept of dark energy in the formation of the universe.
Dr. Sidharth will present the paper along with a number of other scientists on February 4.
The keynote address at the symposium will be delivered by Larisa Laperashvili, a researcher of Theoretical Department of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics and National Research Center “Kurchatove Institute”, Moscow.
Dr. Sidharth said students and young researchers would be encouraged to participate in the event and exchange ideas with the scientists. For registration and further details, call 23235081 or email birlasc@gmail.com
Library inaugurated
Commemorating the centre’s golden jubilee celebrations, the G.P. Birla Library was thrown open to the public from Friday. The library comprises more than 10,000 books.
The membership fee would be around Rs.3,000 a year, and members would not be allowed to take books outside the library.
