MaxiVision Super Specialty Eye Hospital has announced that it has successfully performed the ARMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration) surgery, a first of its kind operation, and improved the vision of a patient suffering from the problem for more than 40 years.

Hospital founder and mentor Dr. Kasu Prasad Reddy operated upon the 72-year-old patient R.V.S. Subbaraju, a professor of chemical engineering, for the ARMD condition. It is a condition where the central retina or the Macula degenerates and the ability to focus decreases sharply with age and it remains defective even if a cataract operation is done.

Dr. Reddy explained that an Indian company, Care group India, of Baroda in Gujarat, has produced a lens invented jointly by Dr. Bobby Qureshi of London and Prof. Pablo Artal of Murcia University. The lens, called ‘IOL AMD’, helps a person with a defective Macula by improving vision. Mr. Subbraju was very happy with the operation and stated that he had tried to get treatment abroad for years without success. Hospital Group COO Sudheer said they have been in the forefront of many proven technologies to improve the vision of patients and the latest lens from Care Group India to treat ARMD too will be a part of its repertoire.
