The forcible marriage of a minor girl was stopped by Centre for Action Research and People’s Development in coordination with the police in Moula Ali on Thursday.

A few days ago, the 17-year-old girl approached Malkajgiri police stating that her family members decided to perform her marriage with a 27-year-old man from old city at a function hall in Kushaiguda on Thursday even though she was a minor.

The police immediately summoned the family members and counselled them. But on Thursday, the family went ahead with the wedding at her residence in Moula Ali. On coming to know about this, the centre representatives with the assistance of police again approached the girl’s relatives and convinced them to stop the marriage.

Notice to hall owners

The police also issued a notice to the marriage hall owner asking him not to allow the child marriage.

A police picket was also posted at the marriage hall and the girl’s residence. When contacted, Malkajgiri Inspector L.C. Naik said that cases would be booked against the girl’s family members if they again tried to perform her marriage.
