Twenty-seven job seekers were duped of ₹29 lakh allegedly by a manpower consultancy in Punjagutta. A case of cheating was registered following a complaint lodged by one of the victims, Punjagutta Inspector S. Mohan Kumar said on Friday.

Priyam Banerjee of Mumbai started Desire Destination Consultancy in Millennium Square building in Punjagutta three months ago. He offered placements in the countries of Ireland, New Zealand, Germany and Australia. His agency had a website.

Banerjee allegedly collected money ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh from each candidate in past three months.

“To lead the job seekers believe him, he even got telephonic interviews conducted and issued fake offer letters to them in the names of some private companies,” Mr. Kumar said.

He suddenly stopped coming to the office and switched off his mobile phone a few days ago. Realising that they were taken for a ride, the candidates approached the police.
