A 35-year-old man immolated himself to death in front of the Chatrinaka police station on Wednesday morning leading to panic in the area. The man was later identified as S. Vittal of Krantinagar near Uppuguda.
Reason for the immolation was not yet established. Quoting his family members’ statements, police said Vittal was suffering from some psychological ailment and perhaps that could have led him to take the bizarre step. “He was behaving abnormally for the last ten days. I planned to take him to a hospital but he ran away from the house. We traced him to our relative’s house at Bolaram and by the time we reached there he ran away from there also,” said S. Anuradha, wife of the deceased.
According to the police, Vittal came near the Chatrinaka police station and doused himself with petrol, which he carried in a bottle. He set himself afire near Sulabh complex in front of the police station. Alerted by his cries for help a few people rushed and doused the flames by covering him with a blanket. Police immediately shifted him to OGH, but he succumbed to burns on the way. A case of suspicious death was registered.
