Police patrolling around Hussainsagar lake received a major boost on Monday when Telangana tourism department allocated policemen a patrol boat and staff, including a lifeguard.

Lake Police Station which polices environs of the lake, deals with a gamut of issues including eve teasing, rash driving, sex trade and suicide attempts. While police officials claimed that crime is largely under control in the station’s policing area, attempt to suicide and rash driving require more to be done.

Speaking to the media at Necklace Road about suicide attempts made by jumping into lake waters, Central Zone DCP V. Kamalasan Reddy said that this year 83 people, who made attempts were rescued, and the boat the tourism department provided would greatly augment their efforts.

“Tourism department has given us a boat, operator and an ace swimmer who would help rescue people,” he said while producing one, Karve Satish, 41, before the media. Mr. Satish attempted suicide late hours on Sunday but failed in his attempts as cops rescued him. Satish’s rescuers have saved the lives of nearly 400 people during the last four years.

Acknowledging that suicide attempts in the lake was a persistent problem, 15 additional home guards were allocated to Lake PS last week. Central zone DCP also announced introduction of a cycle patrol during daytime. Five constables with bicycles would patrol Necklace Road during day while the regular horse mounted cops would patrol the area after hours.

Criminal cases

To curb rash driving, the police took up a special drive on Sunday where they seized half-a-dozen bikes. Mr. Reddy warned that they would impound licences of parents who allow their minor children drive vehicles in Hussainsagar area besides seizing vehicles and registering criminal cases against rash drivers. Officials from HMDA and Tourism department were also present on Monday.
