Bowing to overwhelming demand from corporators of all parties save the Telugu Desam (TDP), Commissioner Sameer Sharma assured to review the current system of maintenance of streetlights.
MIM and Congress corporators claiming there was less than 40 per cent glowing of streetlights, rooted for the contractors system for “more accountability” even when it was pointed out that the expenditure difference was marginal and they had blackmailed the civic body last year by shutting lights for four days.
They demanded the old system be brought back as compliant redressal system was pathetic and there was shortage of material. “We will sit and discuss to finalise the issue in 10 days,” said Mr. Sharma. Initially, he pointed out that he had bequeathed the system and wanted an expert study by ASCI to be complete within two months before any decision.
About large-scale irregularities in the transport wing, he said vigilance and a non-vigilance report were sent to the government for recommending appropriate action. Members demanded the “big fish” be brought to book and not just small fry.
The Commissioner also promised to take up transfers in the Town Planning wing within a week with those below Superintendent-level to be posted outside their respective circles following persistent complaints of “corruption” at lower-levels.
He also said that all senior officials will be transferred to their respective parent departments if they have completed five years of service in GHMC. He also observed that the Ramky deal for an Integrated Solid Waste Management Project was approved by the Cabinet and hence the council could do little.
Members complained about inadequate sweeping units, lax garbage lifting and transport vehicles in bad condition.
