S. Venkateswari, 24, project assistant with the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, died on Tuesday after falling from the terrace of the hostel building she was living in at Chirag Ali lane in Abids.

A short message text in her mobile phone, believed to have been keyed in by her, stated ‘Appa, Amma and all relatives, sorry’. The message was not sent to anyone. The circumstantial evidence and the text message in her phone indicate she committed suicide, the Abids Sub-Inspector, K. Ranga Subbaiah, said.

Hailing from Madurai of Tamil Nadu, the woman came to city a year ago and was living in Vaishnavi Hostel for Working Women. Mr. Venkateswari’s friends in the hostel told the police that she appeared to be dejected for past two days over some personal matter. Her room-mate Lavanya saw her walking in and out of the room in agitated mood for nearly 15 minutes around noon.

Before that, Sujatha, another friend from the same hostel, came to Ms. Venkateswari’s room and spoke to her. “Sujatha advised her to focus on some work and get some sleep so that she gets refreshed,” the SI said. Lavanya heard shouts around noon. She came out to find what had happened and saw Ms. Venkateswari lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
