June 10, 2014 01:36 am | Updated 01:36 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) will collaborate with Tech Mahindra Foundation to set up Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) centres in urban slums in the city and Ranga Reddy district.

The initiative is aimed at providing services and opportunities to the visually impaired and persons with multiple disabilities, a press release said.

The CBR project will provide rehabilitation intervention in areas of health, education, economic independence, social inclusion and independent skill development to people with blindness and low vision. A team of trained community field workers and rehab professionals, physiotherapists and speech therapists will provide door-to-door intervention to needy people.

The project will be implemented in the urban slums of Madhapur, Chandanagar, Hafeezpet, Lingampally, Kukatpally and Borabanda. In the next year, the project aims to conduct vision screening in 1.5 lakh households, rehabilitate around 800 people with blindness, low vision and additional disabilities, conduct community awareness programmes and form self-help groups.
