A life convict committed suicide by hanging himself with a bed-sheet in the barrack bathroom at Cherlapally Central Prison on Thursday morning.

Amboth Padhya (40) from Manchal in Ranga Reddy district was lodged in the prison since November 2011 in connection with the murders of his father and daughter. For the past few months, he was undergoing treatment for mental problems, said Jail Deputy Superintendent S. Rahul.

Two days ago, a local court in Ranga Reddy district held him guilty for the murder of his father and daughter and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

“He tried to commit suicide hanging himself from the ventilator with a bed-sheet. After tying the bed-sheet around his neck, he started banging the bathroom door when the inmates rushed inside and removed the bed-sheet. We first rushed him to the jail hospital and later to the Gandhi Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” a senior jail official said.

He said Amboth could have ended his life as he was unable to cope up with depression after getting life imprisonment.

Post-mortem to the convict’s body was conducted under the supervision of Revenue Divisional Officer concerned at the Gandhi Hospital, he added.
