Laryngectomee society celebrates 13th anniversary

The Laryngectomee Society of Apollo Hospitals, a voluntary self-help rehabilitation group of throat cancer survivors, celebrated its 13 anniversary on Saturday, with tennis star Sania Mirza as the chief guest, a press release informed on Saturday.

Umanath Nayak, the consultant Head and Neck Oncologic surgeon and founder president of the society said throat cancer is a common cancer in our country due to rampant use of tobacco.

About twelve per cent of all cancers in the country are related to throat, with one lakh cases diagnosed every year.

The society has over 300 members, many of who participated in various activities which included a walking competition, the press note said.

A copy of the book ‘Enduring Cancer—Stories of Hope’ by Dr.Umanath Nayak was presented to Ms. Mirza on the occasion.
