A large part of the 158 km-long Outer Ring Road (ORR) has been brought into use with the Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy throwing open to public the recently completed stretch between Shamirpet and Patancheru on Monday.
Only a stretch of 38 km. between Peddamberpet and Shamirpet is to be finished and authorities say they are confident of completing these works within six months. Even on this stretch works are nearing completion on five km., HMDA Commissioner Neerabh Kumar Prasad told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration programme.
Hassle-free movement
The ORR, the biggest social infrastructure projects, is intended to not only decongest the roads in the State capital, but also provide hassle-free movement of vehicles around the State capital. The HMDA has undertaken this project at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,696 crore.
On Monday, the Chief Minister threw open the eight lane carriage way on this 38-km stretch that connects the Rajiv Rahadari with Mumbai Highway via Sultanpur, Dundigal and Medchal. Work on this stretch began in June 2009 at a cost of Rs.1,224 crore.
Authorities plan to install signages and distribute pamphlets for guiding the motorists on the new stretch. Nearly three kilometre long road is yet to be taken up on this road at Kandlakoya near Medchal on account of an order by the Supreme Court. At Kandlakoya, traffic will have to take a diversion. Authorities say there would not be much inconvenience as the diversions mean travel of another two kms from either side.
The ORR now connects National Highways towards Mumbai, Bangalore, Vijayawada and State Highways towards Karimnagar, Medak, Vikarabad, Srisailam, besides Hitec city and Gachibowli.
