For the gifted martial arts exponent from old city, Syeda Falak, it was an evening to remember when she called was called on by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao at the latter’s camp office in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old, who has become the first Indian woman to win gold in the recent open karate championship in U.S.A., has been promised a pleasant surprise by the Chief Minister on June 2, which happens to be the Formation Day of the newly-formed Telangana State.

The Chief Minister was apparently delighted when informed about Falak’s achievements, and even while wishing her the best of luck for all her future assignments, promised complete support from the government.

“I was immensely pleased with the honourable Chief Minister’s response. He was so humble and encouraging,” Falak told The Hindu later.

Interestingly, when Falak evinced keen interest in taking up a job in the Police Department, a smiling Mr. Rao said that the department needed people like her.

“Essentially, I am looking forward to some kind of sponsorship from any corporate group to pursue my passion and bring medals for India, especially in the Asian Games (which she missed last time because of wrangling in the national federation).

My major assignments include the India Open championship in Delhi this August and the World Championship in October in Austria,” the first year MA student of Vanita Vidyalaya said.

Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy, who was present at the meeting, also lauded the young champion on her achievement.
